| Drake Music at NAME conference 2009, York University | Christine Janssen, 3 Sep 2009 |
| Drake Music will be presenting at this year's NAME Conference at 11am on Saturday 19th September under the title: "Towards a fully inclusive Music Curriculum - increasing accreditation options for disabled students in music". The presentation will focus on Drake Music's Curriculum Development Initiative (CDI), which has been running since January 2008 and is funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation’s New Approaches to Learning strand. The over-all aims are to broaden access for disabled pupils: • To the music curriculum in general • To accreditation in music in particular Despite widespread acknowledgement of the importance of music in the education of disabled pupils in the UK, there remains “a general lack of guidance… in what to expect in terms of musical development in a special needs context” (Prof. Graham Welch, IOE), and we believe that there are still relatively few disabled pupils who gain accreditation of any kind in music. Central to the CDI strategy is the creation of accessible, re-useable learning and assessment resources for dissemination to teachers and other music educators around the UK, in order to provide them with tools to accommodate a broader range of disabled pupils. The presentation will showcase resources that have already been created for the Sing Up song bank (funded by Sing Up) as well as Drake Music's own NOCN music course, and will outline plans to create similar resources for GCSE music. The presentation will be delivered by Doug Bott, Jonathan Westrup and Charlotte White. | |
